If You Were Me and Lived In France, A child's introduction to cultures

Written by Carol P. Roman

This book is written for small children from Pre K to age eight to give them the experience of culture at an early age.
The Series will take children on a mini tour around the globe to different countries and cultures. The books are simple and fun to read and have wonderful pictures as well. Each book examines what life would be like from the child's point of view if they were living in another country.
This book is about France and is fun and easy for a child to grasp and also fun. I think it's a great series to own and will be great in a pre school setting as well for teaching small children some geography and culture.
They will be surprised to learn new words for things that they know such as Maman and Papa is for Mommy and Daddy in France. That's just the beginning of a whole new world for children when they get a chance to learn how other cultures around the globe live.

A Captain No Beard story, Strangers on the High Seas

Written by Carol P. Roman

Here is a wonderful story about the journey of imagination and 3 small children Alexander, Hallie and Cayla. They have a delightful adventure on a ship called the Flying Dragon where they are better known as Captain No Beard and  his cousin, First Mate Hallie and the newest member of the crew, Captain's sister Cayla. Children will love hearing this story and the pictures are very colorful and fun. There's also a few lessons that children will learn about getting along, loyalty and strangers. There is also a bit of humor that children will be able to relate to and laugh about.  Fun book for parents as well. This book is volume 4 in a set.

Oh Brother, A Nico and Tugger Tale

Written by Kimberly Sentek and Illustrations by Eumir Carlo Fernandez

Nico and Tugger are 2 dogs that have become brothers and this is a story about how that came to be. I enjoyed reading this book so much although I believe it's meant for children but it's also a book adults will surely enjoy reading as well. Nico was an only dog for so long and he wasn't too keen in the idea of making nice with Tucker at first. So he just stayed away as far away as he could from the sweet little Tucker puppy. But it didn't take long for the boys to decide that they liked each other and so that's just what they did.
A very cleverly told story that siblings of all kinds will identify with and enjoy. The pictures are adorable and well done. The story is actually a true story and so lovers of non fiction like myself will certainly enjoy this tale of 2 dogs. Perfect reading choice for little dog lovers like my grand sons Dan and Dominic who will get a kick out of this book. This is on the shelf to be read to them on their next visit.

Do you know when the bread was baked and lots more handy tips

When you go to buy bread in the grocery store have you ever wondered which is the freshest and  so you squeeze for freshness or softness? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie.
They are:

Monday = Blue,
Tuesday = Green,
Thursday = Red
Friday = White
Saturday = Yellow.

So if today was Thursday, you would want red twist tie; not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)! The colors go alphabetically by color Blue- Green - Red - White - Yellow, Monday through Saturday. Very easy to remember. I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips have different colors. You learn something new everyday! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread with the right color on the day you are shopping.
here are some more handy ideas and things to make your life easier and they are  economical as well.
I love it when I find uses for things that I have at the house and I get something done faster, easier and save money. I hope there is something here that will be of use to someone out there and feel free to comment.

The spirit of the heart

Written by Ismael N. Nuno M.D.
I liked this book from the 1st page because I could tell right away that Dr. Nuno was an excellent story teller. He not only share's his patients stories but he shares his family, his upbringing, his own children. He was a top notch heart surgeon but he is also a man that has a lot of heart. He is articulate and compassionate. He has many interesting stories that are easy to identify with and relate even if you have never been to a heart specialist you'll be able to grasp medical terms easily as you read along. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Very interesting and heart warming, touching and personal.
I received this book from The Cadence Group in exchange for and honest review.

What am I reading, what are you reading?

I am always reading several books every day. I read the Bible and the Big Book daily along with Daily Reflections and a page or 2 from a Joyce Meyer's book. The book I'm reading of her's right now is called "Making good habits, breaking bad habits". Everything by Joyce Meyer is a good read, I don't know how she does it.
I also read a page from Twenty four hours a day which is another AA related book.
But all that is not all.
Here are the books that I am working on right now in order of the most closest to finished being number 1 and so on.

1.The Spirit of the heart
by Ismael N. Nuno M.D.

2.When God makes Lemonade, True stories that amaze and encourage
Created by Don Jacobson

3.The Healthy Heart Book
by Morag Thow, Keri Graham, Choi Lee

4.Oh brother A Nico and Tugger tale
by Kimberly Sentek

5.Afloat
by Erin Healy

Then there's a couple I'm hoping to get to for my own interests but these are on the back burner for now:

1. Fatal friends, deadly neighbors
by Ann Rule

2. The Screwtape Letters
by C.S. Lewis

I am actually getting my review written today up for the 1st book on the list, The Spirit of the heart, it is a wonderful book I might add.

So that's what is on my night stand, on my coffee table and in my bag and on my kitchen table.
I have an assorted taste in books. Mostly non fiction though. What are you reading?

free dogs, puppies and kittens

This message is for you.

Please don't list your dogs for free, or cats for that matter without realizing what they can be used for once they leave your hands. Don't be so ignorant and think they get always get good homes. Many do end up as bait dogs, lab animals... etc it's a cruel world out there. Please put a little more effort in to making sure that your pet doesn't have liters of unwanted puppies or kittens by getting them spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Take responsibility for the animals that you do adopt, dog or cat. They are for life. If you read the ads on Craigslist and in the newspaper everyday you can see how little value people show for the most loyal creatures around.
If you HAVE to find a new home for your pet please do everything in your power to make sure they don't end up used, hurt and or abandoned after they leave your care.
The reason people ask a small rehoming fee is for the fact that people seem to care more about an animal that they paid for although clearly not always true.
I think people should weigh all the things that could happen before they get a pet (things that may cause them to have to get rid of it later) and plan on what they can do about it in order to keep the animal with them. They don't have long lives like humans do although birds do... their depending on us to care for them all of their lives. Do your best to do the right thing for animals, please. Be a good example for your children too. They are watching and learning from you. If you aren't sure then get your kids a stuffed animal.
Thanks for listening

Happy Sunday Morning

This is going to be a lovely near perfect day , weather wise today.  Right now I am having coffee and looking at the box of Fruity Pebbles. I have not been posting as much due to some pain in my head and ear. This tumor is temperamental sometimes. I have another hearing test scheduled for May 6th and then back to KU Medical Center on June 13th for the follow up MRI and from there we will hopefully have some idea as to what to expect next. Meanwhile I have been trying to cut corners and save every nickel and dime so that I be able to get my teeth, or dentures if you will. I hoped I could get them them last month but it wasn't happening.  It's all I think about these days. Well that's not exactly true, I have a lot on my mind lately.
Anyway enough about that. This is a beautiful morning. I'm going to eat, take a shower and walk over to church. I have to meet with the pastor at 10 for a meeting.  I hope you have a blessed day.

The Monster's Game

A poetic book into the child behind the mask of a survivor.
Written and illustrated by @LITTLEGIRL413
Published by Outskirts Press Inc.

This book was quite hard for me to get through. The subject matter is very personal and hit too close to home for me. The author has written these poems in the vein of telling a story about what happened to her but also what happens emotionally inside a child's mind when she/he is being sexually abused/exploited. The blame and the pain become self directed and the effects of the abuse last for a very long time. Littlegirl413 must be a brave person because writing this book had to take a lot of strength. I want to add that she also illustrated the book which impressed me because it showed me how much effort went in to this book.
The pain and the shame of sexual abuse pours out and spills itself out on society and has contributed to the growing number of men and woman suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. The shame and the secrets.  I hope that this book brings some new awareness to what it's like for the child/ survivor as he or she grows up.  As I read through her poems I could relate to different emotions that she described.  Although no story is exactly the same there are many common emotions that we all share.  This is a touchy subject for many people including myself but it's also more prevalent than we would like to think.

Got vinegar? Mores handy uses for vinegar

1. Clear dirt off PCs and electronics

Your computer, printer, fax machine, and other home office gear will work better if you keep them clean and dust-free. Turn off your machine and wash with a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. Wash with a cloth, not a spray bottle. You can use cotton swabs for tight spaces.

2. Get rid of smoke odor

If you’ve recently burned a steak or can’t get rid of that cigarette smell, remove the lingering smoky odor by placing a shallow bowl about three-quarters full of white or cider vinegar in the room where the scent is strongest. To get the smell out of the air, moisten a cloth and wave it in the air.

3. Wipe away mildew

Use undiluted vinegar to wipe away heavy mildew stains. Mix it with water to clean light mildew stains. You can even use a vinegar mist in a spray bottle to prevent mildew stains from forming in rugs and carpets.

4. Clean chrome and stainless steel

To clean chrome and stainless steel fixtures around your home, apply a light misting of undiluted white vinegar from a recycled spray bottle. Buff with a soft cloth to bring out the brightness.

5. Un glue stickers, decals, and price tags

Don’t you hate when you peel a sticker off of your new furniture or product and it’s still sticky from the glue? Worry no more! Use full-strength white vinegar and gently scrape it off the product. Use an expired credit card to scrape. You can also uses this solution to get glue off of glass, plastic and walls.

6. Brighten up brickwork

Have dingy bricks around your fireplace? Use 1 cup of white vinegar mixed with 1 gallon of warm water to scrub the area. Your bricks will be looking shiny and nice!

7. Revitalize wood paneling

You can also use vinegar to shine up your dull wood paneling. Mix 1 pint warm water with 4 tablespoons white or apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Let the mixture soak for a few minutes and then polish.
 8. Remove carpet stains

You can lift out many stains from your carpet with vinegar:
For light stains, mix 2 tablespoons salt with ½ cup white vinegar. Rub into the stain, let try and vacuum.
For tough, ground-in dirt and other stains, make a paste of 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and rub it into the stain using a dry cloth. Let it set for two days, then vacuum.

9. Keep car windows frost-free

Vinegar is a great way to keep frost from forming on your car windows. Spray the outside of your windows with a mixture of 3 parts white vinegar to 1 part water.

10. Refresh your refrigerator

Have you ever smelled a refrigerator that hasn’t been used for a long time? It’s gross! You can freshen up your fridge with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. You can use the solution to wash the interior and exterior of the fridge.

11. Steam-clean your microwave

Fill a bowl with 1 cup water and ¼ cup vinegar. Set the bowl in the microwave and cook on high for 5 minutes. Once the bowl cools down, use the solution to wipe off the walls of the microwave.

12. Disinfect cutting boards

Use full-strength white vinegar to clean wood cutting boards or butcher block counter tops  This is a great alternative to dishwasher detergent because it can weaken surfaces and wood fiber. It disinfects against E.coli, salmonella and staphylococcus.

13. Clean china, crystal, and glassware

Have soap spots and dingy spots on your dishes after you put them in the dishwasher? Simply add a few ounces of vinegar to your dishwasher. It will prevent those hard-water stains from showing up.

14. Trap fruit flies

Did you bring home fruit flies from the market? You can make traps for them that can be used anywhere around your house by filling an old jar about halfway with apple cider vinegar. Punch a few holes in the lid, screw it back on, and you’re good to go.

15. Tenderize and purify meats and seafood
Soaking a lean or inexpensive cut of red meat in a couple of cups of vinegar breaks down tough fibers to make it more tender. You can also use vinegar to tenderize seafood steaks. Let the meat or fish soak in full-strength vinegar overnight.

16. Control your dandruff

Can’t wear those black shirts because your dandruff will show? Vinegar to the rescue! After shampooing, rinse your hair with a mixture of 2 cups apple cider vinegar and 2 cups cold water.

17. Ease sunburn and itching

Gently rub a sunburn or rash with cotton balls or a soft cloth soaked with white or cider vinegar. Try to apply this before the sunburn begins to sting. You can use this to help treat insect bites or rashes from poison ivy or poison oak.

18. Clean your eyeglasses

When it’s more difficult to see with your glasses on than it is with them off, it’s a clear indication that they’re in need of a good cleaning. Applying a few drops of white vinegar to your glass lenses and wiping them with a soft cloth will easily remove dirt, sweat, and fingerprints, and leave them spotless. Don’t use vinegar on plastic lenses, however

19. Stop reds from running

Unless you have a fondness for pink-tinted clothing, take one simple precaution to prevent red washable clothes from ruining your wash loads. Soak your new clothes in a few cups of undiluted white vinegar for 10-15 minutes before their first washing. You’ll never have to worry about running colors again! This also works with other bright colors that you worry might run.

20. Speed germination of flower seed

You can get woody seeds, such as moon flower, passionflower, morning glory, and gourds, off to a healthier start by lightly rubbing them between a couple of sheets of fine sandpaper-and soaking them overnight in a solution of 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 pint warm water. Next morning, remove the seeds from the solution, rinse them off, and plant them.

Enjoy your weekend!

The excitement in Boston is over now. The young man was captured as we all watched from everywhere. I have so much respect for all those that were involved. All the manpower was incredible, from Boston police, Cambridge police, Watertown police, the State police, the FBI, the SWAT teams and MIT police. I know there were more police involved and of course we can't forget about the National Guard.
Hopefully we can get the entire story from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Incomplete passes

This is a wonderfully written memoir of growing up in the 50’s and 60’s in a small tight knit, football oriented community, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Linda Lange doesn't miss a beat as she shares colorful and often amusing glimpses of her not so Jewish family and the best friends she acquired early while growing up in. Packer land.  Her father was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers, like most folks in the area and he shared that love and fervency with Linda.
Her stories are both revealing and quite sentimental as she shares the details and scores of some of the best games played by some of her favorites like Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke and Bart Starr, along with Head Coach Vince Lombardi. She was quite a fortunate teenager and seems to have hobnobbed with just about everyone back in the day.
Her antics and stories of romance, both hers and her best friends mimic the innocence of the times.  She had a crush on “Mr. A” and reading about it made me smile. Linda is not just a loyal football fan but so are her childhood friends. As a matter of fact there is extreme loyalty in their friendship as they have consistently maintained contact with one another mostly through marriages and throughout life. They still enjoy getting together and going to watch the Packers play which is tough since they aren't all still living in Green Bay. Linda has included some wonderful old photographs that help set the tone for the book.  Linda’s style of writing is terrific and never boring.  I think this book would appeal to many, I'm glad I had a chance to read it.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I must add the fact that I honestly enjoyed reading this book.

Don't cry little angel

Saw this poem online today. Couldn't figure out who the author was. Hopefully it will be okay to share it here today Thinking of all the angels that I have known in my lifetime.
My favorite angel, my mother Rosalind Rafferty born  in Boston, Mass 1/15/1940 died  Modesto, Calif. 1/27/2008
Rest in peace Ma

Don't cry little angel,
Your heart is in good hands.
You'll go the distance,
You'll travel distant lands.
Don't worry little angel,
Your tears will soon disappear.
You'll kill the pain and stand
With out fear.
Don't run little angel,
I won't let you down.
With my caress, and all the faith,
You'll forget how to frown.
Keep standing little angel,
Because I won't let you fall.
Believe it, I was there with
Just one call.
Don't hide little angel,
There's no need to conceal.
Don't fear what your thinking,
Don't fear what you feel.
Just sing little angel,
Let heaven hear the voice it made.
Your melody is strong,
Your harmony won't fade.
You can laugh little angel,
You just don't forget.
Laughing heals the soul,
No one's proven me wrong yet.
So smile little angel,
Release your beauty from within.
Destroy the past,
Let the future begin.
So don't cry little angel,
Because you can already see.
You can always and forever,
Forever count on me.

Peach or plum tree?

I need a bit of help to identify the tree please. If you can tell by the blossoms. I say it's a peach tree,  he says it can't be. I have seen the fruit. Some folks like to argue.... it's a dwarf tree and it has reseeded itself in several places in the yard. It is very pretty the last time I looked...plums were a plum color and had smooth skin.  Don't argue back right?  I should know better by now. It's a mystery tree.  I live in the Midwest and right now spring is finally here! We have had some beautiful temperatures over the last few days and everything has just blossomed literally overnight. The problem might be that over the next couple of days we are expecting freezing sleet, snow and cold weather. A storm passing through starting with rain tonight and tomorrow and snow on Wednesday.  That may or may not hurt the daffodils and peonies, tulips etc that are up or close to it.  Anyway if these pictures look familiar at all please just give me a clue, share your opinion on peach or plum. Thanks and have a wonderful evening/day/morning depending on where you are.

Single Effort

First of all I want to say that this is a book that many people would get something from reading so don’t be fooled by the cover that announces it’s the essential guide for the single guy. Single Effort may have been written by a newly single guy named Joe Keller.  Joe knows how to get things done and he has covered every aspect of being single and made it look real simple. I am a woman and I got a lot out of reading his book. Joe is a very clever guy and he has put so much information between the covers of this book that it just amazed me.  Everything is covered from getting divorced, starting over and everything that comes with it.  He has done his research, that’s for sure!  He has though of everything and more.
He shares the challenges and his solutions including making the new place comfortable while looking good. Tips and good products to help keep it clean.  He has great powers of reasoning and he knows just how to live alone but at the same time keep it female friendly. What I mean by that is that sometimes when men live alone they forget to think about would a woman feel comfortable coming over here and what can I do to make sure she feels welcome. Joe has already thought of all that and more.  He also shares some  pretty tasty yet simple recipes, dating advice, cleaning tips and just general good sense ideas that all go together to make the transition from married to single a success. Every page in the book is worth reading because there is something useful in every chapter. Yes I’m a woman that has been single for years but I really can appreciate a book like this one.
You can learn  more about Joe

A Prayer for Hope

Heavenly father, I am your humble servant,
I come before you today in need of hope.
There are times when I fell helpless,
There are times when I feel weak.
I pray for hope.
I need hope for a better future.
I need hope for a better life.
I need hope for love and kindness.

Some say that the sky is at it’s
darkest just before the light.
I pray that this is true, for all seems dark.
I need your light, Lord, in every way.

I pray to be filled with your light from
head to toe. To bask in your glory.
To know that all is right in the world,
as you have planned, and as you want
it to be.

Help me to walk in your light, and live
my life in faith and glory.

In your name I pray, Amen.
